태국의 대안학교 무반텍

태국 칸차나부리 지방에 있는 무반텍(어린이 마을 The Children＇s Village School 이란 뜻) 학교는 권위주의에 대항하여 새로운 교육체계를 건설하려는 노력 가운데 삶의 터전을 위협받는 아이들을 위해 1979년 세워진 학교이다.

학교의 기본 원칙은 공산주의 국가이든, 민주주의 국가이든, 혹은 독재국가이든지 관계없이 모든 권위주의적인 교육체계와 국가권력에 반대하는 것이다.
그래서 무반텍은 자유, 자치, 그리고 정신뿐만 아니라 신체와 정서를 모두 통합한 전인(全人)적 발달을 교육의 목표로 삼고 있다. 이 학교는 콰이강의 언덕을 끼고 있는 4만4천 평의 사탕수수 밭이었던 넓은 농장을 터전으로 삼고 있다.

가정과 사회로부터 버림받은 소외계층의 장애, 가난, 학대 받은 아이들이 공동생활을 하면서, 자립하는 데 필요한 지식과 기술을 배우고 있다. 6,7명의 아동이 한명의 교사와 한가정을 꾸리며 20가정이 의식주 등 기초생활을 보장하는 공동체를 이루며 지낸다. 아이들은 이곳을 제2의 집이라고 여긴다. 학교의 운영에 필요한 경비는 외부의 후원으로 해결을 하고 있으며. 태국 국가로부터는 지원을 전혀 받지 않는다.

하루의 시작은 언제 일어나도 좋지만 식사시간이 정해져 있어 아침은 7시 30분까지, 점심은 12시~1시, 저녁은 5시 30분~6시 30분, 정해진 시간에 먹게 된다. 교육은 교육부가 허가한 1~6학년까지 초등교육법에 규정된 대로 교과과정을 운영해야 한다. 또 추가과정을 더해서 교외수업을 강조하고 있다. 교사들은 오전 9시부터 12시까지 정해진 시간표대로 교육을 하지만 실제로 3년간의 놀이와 치료활동 후에 학생들에게 수업에 참석하라고 요청하거나 제안한다.

읽기, 쓰기, 수학 등 학문적 수업은 오전 9시에서 12시까지 하고, 실용적 수업은 오후에 교실, 집, 마을 어느 곳이나 학습장으로 이용된다. 오전 9시부터 오후 10시까지 무반덱의 모든 활동부서는 어린이가 마음대로 배우도록 개방되어 있다. 어린이는 얌전히 교실에 앉아 강의를 듣는 보다 목공실, 미술실, 음악실, 도서관, 농장, 흙과 식물이 있는 들판 등에서 자기가 하고 싶은 일을 선택해서 한다. 특히 이곳 어린이들의 억압되고 공격적인 정서를 풀어주는 필수활동에는 흙, 물 그리고 동식물과의 놀이, 연구활동, 춤추기, 노래하기, 미술 등이 포함된다. 이러한 활동을 통해 자기 자신과 자기 능력을 알게 되며, 이 치료활동을 통해 전공으로 발전시키고 충분한 훈련으로 직업적인 전문가가 되기도 한다. 이곳의 교직원 수는 28명으로 교육대학을 나온 자격증을 소지한 보통교사와 목공, 요리, 직조, 도자기 등 기술적인 면을 지도하는 기술지도 교사가 있다. 아이들과 함께 먹고 자고 공부하고 놀며 24시간을 함께 보낸다. 교사들은 11개 숙소에 흩어져 어린이들과 가정을 이루어 살고 있다.

어떤 규칙을 위반했거나 남의 권리나 자유를 침해했을 경우, 서머힐의 전교회의 같은 성격의 전교회의가 매주 한번씩 있어 그곳에서 토론이 된다. 회의는 배심원 보고로 시작하여 회의 간사가 규칙을 위반했거나 남의 권리, 자유를 침해한 사례에 대해 보고 한다. 처벌은 명문화되어 있고, 위반자는 회의에서 변명할 기회를 갖는다. 벌의 형태는 사과하기, 다과금지, 비디오시청금지, 외출금지, 강에서 놀이금지 등이 있다.

자연농업으로 이곳 식구들이 농산물을 재배해서 먹고 있다. 초등교육 6년을 마친 어린이들, 15세 이상의 사람들은 적어도 하루에 2시간은 채소밭에서 일한다. 신선한 물과 접촉하고 식물을 기르는 것은 정서적으로 불안한 아이들에게 가장 큰 치료효과가 있다고 믿기 때문이다.

이곳의 아이들은 자연을 상대로 자연에서 마음껏 뛰어놀면서 자연이 공부이면서 놀이임을 여실히 보여주고 있다. 우리의 현실과는 다른 세상의 아이들을 보면서 한편으로는 ‘부럽다 ’라는 생각을 떨쳐낼 수 가 없었다. 조금은 마음의 여유를 가지고 남보다 공부를 잘하는 아이가 아닌 남보다 따뜻한 아이가 될 수 있도록 마음으로 빌어본다.

A chance to share your experiences, thoughts and love with deprived children

* Overview *
The village is one of the voluntary projects of the Foundation for Children. The foundation has been long established in Thailand to protect children's rights and take care of neglected children. The foundation is home to children who have suffered family or social problems. This programme has various vocational training projects, where any skills are welcome that can help the children learn and to give them the attention that they need.


* Programme details *
Day 1: Bangkok - Arrival Transfer
Arrival and joint-transfer to your accommodation. An experienced guide will meet you at the airport and will provide you with some useful tips for exploring the city and give you some ideas of what you could do on your tour.

Day 2: Bangkok - An Orientation tour - Learn Thai
Today is a tour on foot. The aim is to ensure that you see as much as possible of the everyday life of Bangkok and its people, and what better way to do that than to combine your walk with as many different modes of public transport as possible. Stops on the tour will normally include some interesting temples, a flower market and Little India or Chinatown. Then you will spend some time learning Thai in an informal atmosphere. You will have lessons that start with simple words and conversation, just enough to get by, and then more specific words that you will need according to the project you are joining. Then go out to try it in real-life situations, such as a local market, taking your own transport and trying to bargain for things by yourself.

Day 3: Bangkok - A Village Experience
You will have a lazy morning to discover more of Bangkok and then leave the bustling city behind by taking a local bus for about 2 hours to a small village near Kanchanaburi town. After settling into your charming home stay and receiving a warm welcome from your host family you will then have time to explore the village and the chance to practice your Thai skills with the villagers. You may also join in the farming activities of your 'Thai family' in their organic garden.

Day 4: Home stay - Kanchanaburi - Children's Village
Time to say farewell to your kind hosts as you need to catch the local bus to Kanchanaburi and explore the town, see the famous 'Death Railway', World War II Museum, etc. Then continue by public bus to Moobandek, or the Children's Village -Upon arrival the teachers will give orientation to learn about their project and the area.

Days 5-12: Children's Village
The village is one ofthe voluntary projects of the Foundation for Children. They receive vocational training, learn about farming and join the classes that include language learning. There are now about 100-120 children of various ages. The program for each day normally starts with an early morning routine check of the village's vegetable plantation then breakfast. You will need to help the children prepare food. The project coordinator will then run through what you will be working on. This could be preparing for lessons, teaching lessons about your home country (it would help if you could bring some items/props from home to use in lessons) or helping in the kindergarten or nursery. You can also join one of the village's development projects (cleaning the school, vegetable farming, planting, vocational workshops, etc.) or look after the small children who have no class. There are also a great variety of vocational workshops, such as carpentry, agriculture, construction, computers, cooking and handicraft activities such as batik, sewing, weaving, etc.

Day 13: Kanchanaburi - Bangkok
After saying farewell to the children return to Bangkok by public bus.

Day 14: Bangkok - departure transfer
Spend this last free day shopping or exploring more of Bangkok on your own. Then joint transfer to the airport for flight home.

Weekends and public holidays are free for you to do as you please. The co-ordinator will help you with information to plan your own travelling during this free time.
