Cheap Hotels Bangkok - Around the Khao San Road 'Backpacker' Area

Cheap hotels in Bangkok can easily be found in the 'Khao San Road' area. The quality of guesthouses and hotels here is often not good though so I've done a review of the accommodation to help you choose somewhere nice

Match the NUMBERS on the map below with the list of hotels and guesthouses below the map.

To see the map below larger and better quality and/or to print the map, head to this page. (opens in new window)

For the best quality printing, make sure you save it to your computer and print, rather than printing straight from the internet.

I haven't included my Navbar on this page, so that you can see the map larger. Click here to go to my Bangkok page..

On the Bangkok map, this area is on the left side, a little above the center. Look on the map for the number 13 on the river. Khao San Road and Chakrapong Road are marked nearby.

I've included a STAR RATING for the accommodation, from 1 to 5 STARS.

5 STAR is EXCELLENT

1 STAR is BAD

How did I decide what star rating to give?

  • Value for money. This is relation to other guesthouses and hotels in the area. For instance, I've given some hotels just a 1 star, but that same hotel in a city like London or even in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok would be good! So the actual quality of a 1 STAR hotel room might be higher than 1 STAR gives credit.
  • How the rooms and hotel looks and also the feel of the hotel.
  • A guesthouse might have moved from, for example, a 2.5 Star to 3 Star if there was a sociable feel to the place, perhaps the staff were really friendly.

1 US Dollar is equal to 35 Thai Baht

Guesthouses Costing Between about 100 to 500 Baht per night ($3 US to $15US)

(Click here to see hotels and guesthouses costing 500 baht and over.)

19) Shambara Boutique Hostel & Restaurant (4 STAR) - Just 9 rooms here in this little oasis - rooms are attractively decorated, each one unique (I just saw one). Single fan rooms cost 300 baht (single air: 390 baht). Double fan: 500 baht (air-con:600 baht). Toilets and hot water showers are outside the room. There's a nice TV/DVD area upstairs where you can relax and there's a relaxing restaurant area downstairs, where fish are swimming about in a pond. The fan room I saw, with share bathroom (250 baht) was quite small and gets hot during the day, as does the slightly larger but still quite small double room with share bathroom. The other room I saw was an air-con, twin-bed room with private hot water bathroom for 600 baht that was a little larger. Share bathrooms are attractive and clean. 22) Charoendee Boutique Hostel (4 STAR) - Newly opened in September, 2009, this place has a nice location and simple, small, nicely decorated rooms. It's on Khao San Road, but 30 meters away down a small alley so it won't be too noisy here at night. Single rooms with fan and share hot water bathroom and toilet cost a reasonable 250 baht per night. Double fan rooms are 400 baht. (Air-con: 500 baht)...prices go up to 750 baht for larger rooms. Their website's still being constructed (Oct, 09): www.charoendee.com (opens in new window). The prices I mentioned are an introductory rate, so they may increase. There's free wifi in some of the rooms. Toast and coffee or tea in the morning is free - there's a nice area where you can enjoy this. Anyway, it's the first down this small lane. It's newly opened (april '09) and is colorfully decorated with yellows and reds. There are small fan rooms for 300 baht with share toilet and air con rooms that I didn't see, with share toilet, for 400 baht. 36) Lucky House (3 STAR) - Rooms here were quite nice with TV, air-con and a nice private bathroom with hot shower and toilet. The 350 baht room I saw had only a tiny window looking into the corridor. For 390 baht, the room had a bigger window. The guesthouse is not that well signposted, so keep an eye out for the sign. Guesthouse / Hotel Costing 500 Baht (about US $15) or More Per Night

(Click here to see guesthouses costing less than 500 baht per night.)

1) Villa Cha-Cha (4 STAR) - Large hotel with an attractive lobby/restaurant area and nice swimming pool. Rooms are priced between 800 baht and 2,750 baht per night. I saw 2 rooms - a King Junior Suite (costing 1,750 baht per night for 1 or 2 people) was very nice....the room was a good size with a comfy looking chaisse-lounge and bed, writing desk area, flatscreen TV. The bathroom was also very nicely furnished. The other room I saw was the cheapest, for 800 baht nightly. This was quite nicely furnished but a lot smaller, with flatscreen TV. All rooms come with air-con. There's also a sauna here. There are lots of carved stone figures in the lobby area, including a group of life-size monks kneeling in front of Buddha. Find out more by visiting their website: www.villachacha.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 280 1025 Address: 36 Tani Road. Email: rsvn@villachacha.com

2) Buddy Boutique Hotel (4 STAR) - The nicest hotel along Khao San Road but with a price to match. 2000 baht nightly will give you a relatively small but very nicely decorated, wooden room with writing desk. There's also a pool and a fitness center here. Website: www.buddylodge.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 629 4477 / 629 4499 Address: 265 Khao San Road.

3) Dang Derm (4 STAR) - Huge, new hotel that dominates one end of Khao San. They'd opened up some of the rooms when I visited in May, '09. The hotel should be finished by Christmas, 2009. The room I saw, at 890 baht, was relatively small, but had a great design with smart TV and DVD player. There were also 1,100 baht and 1,500 baht rooms. Prices may go up! There's an escalator to approach the reception area! The same owner of D & D Inn. There are some really nice pictures of future rooms shown on their website: www.khaosanby.com (opens in new window). Email: contact@khaosanby.com Tel: +66 (0)2 629 2040 (can replace the last 2 digits with 41 to 48 to get through). Address: 1 Khao San Road

4) D & D Inn (4 STAR) - A large and popular hotel with swimming pool. Rooms are priced between 550 baht and 1,400 baht per night. The deluxe single room I saw, for 750 baht a night, was relatively small but really stylishly decorated. Staff were friendly. See their website: www.khaosanby.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 629 0526 / 629 0527 / 629 0528 Address: 68-70 Khao San Road Email: see their website

The hotel also has a pool that didn't look too crowded. Rooms between 1,600 and 1,900 baht per night. See their website: www.viengtai.co.th (opens in new window). Email: info@viengtai.co.th Tel: +66 (0)2 2805434 (can replace the last 2 digits with 35 to 45 to get through).

6) Pannee Lodge (3.5 STAR) - Much nicer and better priced than its sister guesthouse, Pannee House (number 9 below). The VIP rooms, for 1,200 baht (1,400 baht for 2 people) were nicely and carefully furnished. Not large but a good size, rooms come with TV, air-con, and a very nice bathroom. Outside is a rooftop seating area with lots of plants around. The standard room, for 1,000 baht (1,350 baht for 2 people), was still nice, but a bit small. It's certainly worth paying the extra 50 baht if there's 2 of you! Prices shown were perhaps discounted, although it was the peak season when I visited. The hotel currently uses its sister hotel website: www.panneehouse.com (opens in new window). Address: 52 Chakrapong Rd. Tel: +66 (0)2 6295 112 / 6295 113 Email: pannee_house@yahoo.co.th

7) Sleep Withinn (3.5 STAR) - Nice name for a hotel I thought. Rooms from 950 baht to 1,300 baht per night. Stylish rooms and hotel but the rooms seem small to me for the price. 8) Royal Hotel (3.5 STAR) - Large hotel that has an attractive, old-style lobby. The room I saw had probably seen better days but it was still decent with air-con, TV and small sofa and at just 1,300 baht and with use of the hotels swimming pool, it's certainly competitively priced for the area. Tel: 66 (0)2 222 9111 (can change the last 2 digits with 12 to 26 to get through)

9) Khaosan Holiday (3.5 STAR) - Some nice new rooms here. For 1,200 baht a night, the suite rooms are furnished nicely and are a good size. There's a stylish double bed at floor level and a good TV. The room I saw had a window, but no view. The twin or double room, for 700 baht are also styled nicely, but smaller and without the floor level bed, although there was a view from the room in the room I saw. Rooms come with air-con, hot water private bathroom, free wifi and free use of the swimming pool at Villa Cha-Cha (number 1 on my list), just a 5 minute walk. 10) Hello Guesthouse (3 STAR) - The room I saw here with double bed, TV, air-con, fridge and window (One person: 590 baht, 2 people: 690 baht) was quite nice and had a stylish hot water bathroom. The room wasn't large....or small! Rooms range in price from 490 baht to 690 baht per night. Tel: +66 (0)2 629 5770 Address: 147/5-6 Kraisi Rd. Email: helloguesthouse@gmail.com

11) Pannee House (2 STAR) - Quite nicely decorated rooms here, with air-con and small TV, but overpriced, at 800 baht per night for 1 person (1,300 baht for 2 people). The room I saw had a window but not a nice view...for a room with view, it will cost you 1,500 baht nightly. Breakfast is included in the price. Website: www.panneehouse.com (opens in new window). Address: 95-97 Tani Road. Tel: +66 (0)2 629 0095 Email: pannee_house@yahoo.co.th

12) Thai Cozy House (2 STAR) - Quite a large hotel with over 50 rooms, I thought the rooms here were overpriced. For 650 baht a night for 1 person (750 baht for 2 people), the room was quite nicely decorated but small and without a window. A room with a window would cost 800 baht. Rooms come with wifi, TV, air-con, hot water private shower and fridge. Website: www.thaicozyhouse.com (opens in new window). Address: 111/1-3 Tani Road. Email: kthy@thaicozyhouse.com Tel: +66 (0)2 629 5875

13) Rikka Inn (2 STAR) - I wasn't too impressed with this hotel. There are rooms here from between 600 and 1150. The rooms I saw, at 600 baht, was small and certainly overpriced. There's a swimming pool here on the rooftop but for those of you who like an early morning swim, you'd be out of luck as it's bizzarely only open from between 10am and 6pm. Website: www.rikkainn.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 282 7511 / 2827515 Email: info@rikkainn.com Address: 259 Khao San Road.

14) Orchid House (1 STAR) - I was shown a relatively small room for 500 baht a night. Tel: +66 (0)2 2802691 / 2802692 Email: orchidhouse.bangkok@gmail.com Address: 323/3 Thanon Rambuttri (Rambuttri Road).

15) Rambuttri House (1 STAR) - The 900 baht rooms with air-con and TV didn't really make me want to stay! Same for the 450 baht rooms with share bathroom. In October, '09, their website appeared to have a virus so be careful: www.rambuttri-house.com Tel: +66 (0)2 629 3233 Email: reserved@rambuttri-house.com Address: 323 Thanon Rambuttri (Rambuttri Road)

16) Sawasdee Bangkok Inn (1 STAR) - Another overpriced 'Sawasdee' chain that seem to spend too much on advertising and not enough on the hotels. Rooms here are priced between 600 baht and 1,400 baht per night. (this was in October, 2009 - when I visited in May, 2009 rooms were between 570 baht and 1,250 baht). I saw a room here for 1,000 baht, with TV, air-con, minibar, private hot water shower. It was quite small and wasn't nicely decorated. website: www.hotelsawasdee.com (opens in new window) or www.sawasdee-hotels.com (opens in new window). Address: 126/2 Khaosan Road. Tel: +66 (0)2 280 1251 Email: rsvnsb@sawasdee-hotels.com

17) Sawasdee Banglumpoo Inn (1 STAR) - one of the most overpriced guesthouses I've come across. Rooms are 740 baht and 800 baht and include breakfast. The room I saw for 740 baht wasn't big, wasn't particularly nicely decorated, had a small window and seemed to justify its price by having what top-end hotels have - a minibar with selection of drinks. Website: www.sawasdee-hotels.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 629 2526 / 282 3748 Email: rsvnsb@sawasdee-hotels.com Address: 162 Khao San Road

18) Sawasdee Khaosan Inn (1 STAR) - Part of the not-so-nice-hotel chain, this hotel on Chakrapong road is certainly overpriced so this is more of a warning - there are better hotels out there! The 720 baht rooms were OK, as were the 1,450 baht rooms - just ok. Website: www.sawasdee-hotels.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 282 2683 / 629 4798 Email: rsvnsb@sawasdee-hotels.com

66) Khaosan Park Resort - Under construction. I'll let you know when it's open.
