Cheap Hotels in Bangkok

Cheap hotels in Bangkok can easily be found along Soi Rambuttri (just one minutes walk from Khao San Road), and along Phra Arthit Road that runs parallel to the Chao Phraya River. I visited 45 guesthouses and hotel in this area, ranging in price from 120 baht per night (about $3.5 US) up to 2,400 baht (about $60 US).

Match the numbers on the map with the hotels/guesthouses below.

Lots of the hotels and guesthouses below aren't good value. I suggest choosing accommodation higher up the list. The area around Soi Rambuttri is more relaxed than many areas around Khao San Road. It's very close to a large temple so it's not too noisy and there's quite a laid-back feel, yet there are many restaurants and places where you can get a drink. Used-book sellers, food sellers and clothes sellers operate their stalls amongst tourists. The area does get crowded and lively at night.

If you want to see the map below larger and better quality and/or to print the map, click here. (opens in new window).

For the best quality printing, make sure you save it to your computer and print, rather than printing straight from the internet.

I haven't included my Navbar on this page, so that you can see the map larger. Click here to go to my Bangkok page.

On the Bangkok map, this area is on the left side, a little above the center. Look on the map for the number 13 on the river. Phra Arthit Road and Santichai Prakarn Park are marked just next to it. Notice Phra Sumen Road is spelled Phra Sumane Road on the Bangkok map.

I've included a STAR RATING for the accommodation, from 1 to 5 STARS.

5 STAR is EXCELLENT

1 STAR is BAD

How did I decide what star rating to give?

  • Value for money. This is relation to other guesthouses and hotels in the area. For instance, I've given some hotels just a 2 star, but that same hotel in a city like Singapore or even on Silom Road in Bangkok would be good! So the actual quality of a 2 STAR hotel room might be higher than 2 STARS gives credit.

  • How the rooms and hotel looks and also the feel of the hotel.

  • A guesthouse might have moved from, for example, a 2.5 Star to 3 Star if there was a sociable feel to the place, perhaps the staff were really friendly.

1 US Dollar is equal to 35 Thai Baht

1) Wild Orchid Villa (4/4.5 STAR) - Sometimes guesthouses are popular for a reason. I've often seen this place busy and wondered why. Now I know. The rooms are some of the nicest and best value in the area. Rooms range in price from 200 baht up to 1,300 baht per night. The 1,300 baht, suite room was fantastic. The room was really stylishly decorated, large, with comfy looking sofa, large TV and private hot water bathroom. This room was up on the rooftop, with sun-loungers just outside the room - you might forget you're in Bangkok. The smaller 850 baht room was great too. Lovely furnishings, including a really comfy looking one seater chair/sofa. There are also rooms for 650 baht which I didn't see (come without the comfy chair). The 200 baht room was a small room that was simple but quite nice, with share hot water bathroom. The whole hotel is nicely furnished. Downstairs is a popular restaurant area - good for meeting other travelers. Find out more on their website: www.wildorchidvilla.com (opens in new window). Email: info@wildorchidvilla.com Tel: +66 (0)2 629 4378 Address: 8, Soi Chanasongkhram

2) Navalai River Resort (4 STAR) - Really stylish, modern rooms in this new hotel. Certainly some of the best rooms in the Banglumpoo area. The rooms I saw cost 2,100 and 2,400 baht per night. There's also a swimming pool here. Find out more and see photos by visiting their website: www.navalai.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 280 9955 Email: info@navalai.com

3) Mango Lagoon Place (3.5 STAR) - Quite nice rooms here that could be described as a more traditional or typical hotel room. There's carpet and large curtains, and lamps. Rooms are air-con and come with a clean modern hot water bathroom. The 850 baht room I saw was a good size and came with table and 2 chairs. The 750 baht room was slightly smaller and came with a small sofa. There's an attractive restaurant/garden area downstairs with tables set amongst tall trees. Tel: +66 (0)2 281 4783 Email: mango_lagoon_place@hotmail.com Address: 30, Soi Rambuttri.

4) Lamphu House (3.5 STAR) - Tucked away down a small alley, this large hotel has a quiet feel with rooms for between 200 and 920 baht per night. I saw 2 rooms. For 680 baht, there's a nice wooden style to the good-sized double room, with bamboo bed and wooden flooring. There's also an attractive big balcony. Room is air-con and private hot water bathroom. The other room, for 370 baht nightly, was a bit smaller and just had a corridor window. It still had nice furniture inside, and was quite a good size for the price. Share hot water showers. Find out more on their website: www.lamphuhouse.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 6295861 / 6295862

5) Thai Green Guest House (3.5 STAR) - Down a very quiet alley off Phra Sumen, this guest house is family-run and has a friendly feel. Rooms are cheap and simple. A single, small room with window and share cold water bathroom costs 100 baht a night. (double: 130 baht / twin: 140 baht). Pay 170 and you'll get a double bed room with private cold shower and toilet. I loved the quiet here...you'll probably hear birds singing...you might forget you're in Bangkok! Tel: +66 (0)2 281 6910 Address: Trok Kai Chai, off Phra Sumen Road.

6) Happy House (3.5 STAR) - This guest house is popular, with a sociable restaurant area downstairs. The hotel has a nice, clean and fresh wooden feel to it. I saw a double room with small balcony for 581 baht per night. The entrance to the hot water bathroom was actually outside on the balcony which I thought was nice. The room itself was small too but was nicely decorated with comfy looking bed, a large flatscreen TV was on the wall and it came with air-con. The other room I saw was a single bed room that had no window. This room was small, but did have private hot water bathroom, air-con. and a large flatscreen TV too. 370 baht will give you a room with scare bathroom. Prices go up to 1,120 baht per night. Security seemed very good here too. Lots of cameras to deter thieves. Have a look at their website: www.happyhouseguesthouse.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (02) 280 3301 Address: 46, Soi Chana Songkhram

7) O Bangkok (3.5 STAR) - The rooms here had a fresh, simple, clean feel that I liked. Big windows, nice beds, wooden furniture, clean private hot water bathrooms. No TV. Priced between 530 baht and 630 baht per night (depending on whether you have air-con or fan, and which side of the hotel you're on - the side facing Soi Rambuttri is more expensive), it's perhaps not the best deal in the area, but there is a nice feel to the hotel in general. A nice place for couples I think. Up on then top floor was a nice refreshing breeze and you're quite high up. Tel: +66 (0)2 281 4777 / (0)2 6290129 Email: o_bangkok05@yahoo.com Address: 28/1 Soi Rambuttri.

8) Apple Guest House (No 2) (3.5 STAR) - This small guesthouse is tucked away down a narrow alley. It's very quiet here which is nice, as you're right in the center of the backpacker area. The hotel is a lovely wooden building and the rooms are simple with fan and doule bed and windows. Price for one person is 180 baht per night, 2 people is 250 baht. The share bathroom has cold showers, but you don't really need hot showers in Bangkok. The owner is friendly man. Certainly a guesthouse people like to return to Tel: +66 (0)2 281 1219 Address: 11 Trok Kai Chai, Off Phra Sumen Road.

9) New Siam Riverside (3.5 STAR) - Large hotel by the Chao Phraya River, the rooms are pleasant but not large. Standard rooms cost 1,300 nightly. What looked like the same kind of room but with a river view cost 1,800 baht. And triple rooms cost 1,950 nightly. There's als a swimmimg pool here, right next to the river. See their website: www.newsiam.net (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 629 3535 Address: 21 Phra Arthit Road.

10) Rambuttri Village Inn (3 STAR) - Popular place with single fan rooms for 290 baht, double fan, 580 baht, single air-con, 480 baht superior air-con, 580 baht. The only room free for me to see was the superior and I thought it was a bit small for the price. This place has a relatively small, busy swimming pool - to have access to a pool for as little as 290 baht makes this place popular. Tel: +66 (0)2 2829162 / 2829163

11) Secret Garden Guest House (3 STAR) - There's quite a modern feel to this guest house. The rooms, priced at 600 baht per night (1 or 2 people) are quite a good size (perhaps a bit on the small size for the price) and have an interesting style where the floor bed is on a raised platform. There was a nice view from the room I saw. Rooms come with TV, air-con and an attractive private hot water bathroom. Tel: +66 (0)2 282 0953 Address: 45-47 Trok Rong Mai

12) Gecko House (3 STAR) - I like the simple wooden rooms here. They come with fan, window and share bathroom and cost 250 baht for one person, 300 baht for 2 people. There are few rooms here, making for a friendly feel to this family guesthouse. I like it that places like this have remained in this area, as Soi Rambuttri and the streets off it are quickly being overrun by big, new hotels. You can't ring up to book a room here. on Soi Chana Songkhram.

13) Hong 11C Ingham Hotel (3 Star) If you like dorms, then 4 STAR - This Korean-run hotel has just dorm bed rooms, costing 150 baht per night. If you like dorms, this is certainly a good choice. It's very clean throughout, there's plenty of space in the large air-con rooms (with about 8 beds, single-sex I think). Sturdy looking, large lockers are in the rooms. The whole hotel is nicely furnished. on a mezzanine floor is a chill area with smoking pipe. Certainly a good place to meet other (mainly Korean - 95 % according to the man I spoke with) travelers. There's a Korean restaurant downstairs.

14) New Siam II Guest House (3 STAR) - Popular place to stay with swimming pool. Fan rooms cost 720 baht, air-con 840 baht. The rooms are nicely furnished but aren't large so the price seems a bit high. website: www.newsiam.net (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 2822795 / 6290101

15) Phiman Inn (3 STAR) - The rooms I saw, at 1,100 baht and 1,400 baht per night were nice but I thought overpriced. Breakfast is included and you can use the hotel pool. Wifi is an extra 100 baht daily. See the rooms on their website: www.bhimaninn.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 282 6171 (can replace the last 2 digits with 72 to 75 to get through). Email: info@bhimaninn.com

16) R.S Guesthouse (3 STAR) - Down a quiet alley, this guesthouse has simple, quite nice rooms for 200 baht (share bathroom) and 250 baht (private bathroom). Rooms come with a double bed and a large window. The whole guesthouse is wooden which gives the place a nice feel. The only thing I didn't like about this place was the 3 dogs in a cage downstairs. Hopefully they're out of the cage more than they're in it. Tel: +66 (0)2 282 4875 Email: rs_guesthouse@hotmail.com Address: 8, Soi Trok Kai Chai (off Phra Sumen Road).

17) Peachy Guest House (3 STAR) - The wooden style to the place gives a nice feel. Rooms cost just 120 baht for the small fan rooms with share bathroom. 200 gives you air-con. Private bathroom rooms cost 400 baht. It might get noisy here as they have live music nightly and you'll be next to busy Phra Athit Rd. Tel: +66 (0)2 281 6471

18) KC Guest House (3 STAR) - Pleasant enough rooms...220 baht will get you a fan room with share bathroom, 300 baht with private bathroom and air-con rooms cost 450 baht. Certainly an option if you're on a budget. Tel: +66 (0)2 2820618 / 6290342

19) New Siam III House (3 STAR) - Nicely furnished rooms with TV, air-con, safe and fridge. But for 790 baht a night, the rooms feel a bit small. Tel: +66 (0)2 6294844 / 6294846 Website: www.newsiam.net (opens in new window).

20) New My House Guest House (3 STAR) - Rooms from 160 to 500 baht. 200 baht with fan gives you a private bathroom but the rooms are small. Popular area downstairs for laying back to watch a film on their large TV. Tel: +66 (0)2 2829263 / 2829264

21) Green Guest House (3 STAR) - Nicely furnished small rooms. 200 baht fan rooms with shared bathroom seem a good deal. The 400 baht rooms with air-con and TV seem overpriced without a toilet inside. Tel: +66 (0)2 6293025 / 6293020

22) Mini House (3 STAR) - Tucked away, this place has small fan rooms for 150 baht (single) and 200 baht (double) with shared bathroom. The wooden style old house gives the place a touch of character but beware the thin walls! Tel: +66 (0)2 280 7560

23) Four Sons House (3 STAR) - I saw a single room here, that was small with a single bed but had a nice, clean, private hot water bathroom, a wardrobe, air-con, window and large TV which wasn't bad for 350 baht per night. A double bed room with no window costs 450 baht, with window, 500 baht per night. Website: www.fs-hotel.com (opens in new window). Address: 78/80 Phra Arthit Rd. Tel: +66 (0)2 282 2411 Email: fsh@fs-hotel.com

24) Amarin Inn (3 STAR) - Down a small street off Phra Sumen, the hotel offered rooms for 600 baht with TV and air-con. They were pleasant but a bit on the small side (for the price). See their website: www.amarininn.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 282 2790 / 282 2444 / 282 2796 Email: amarin_inn@yahoo.com

25) Merry V Guest House (3 STAR) - A large budget guesthouse with single rooms for 150 baht per night (double rooms: 200 baht). The rooms are small but not totally box-like - they do have a window, although they just look out on to the corridor. Share bathrooms. They do have some private bathroom rooms here, with prices up to 500 baht, but I didn't see these as they were full. Tel: +66 (0)2 282 9267 / 2829268

26) DDM House (3 STAR) - A Korean owned place that has mainly dorm rooms for 120 baht per night. (there are 2 private rooms, for 200 baht nightly). Single sex, air-con 8 person dorm rooms were clean, and a good size. There are lockers for your valuables but I think you have to have our own lock. There's a Korean restaurant downstairs. I think everyone I saw when I visited the place was Korean. No contact number.

27) Chai Home Stay (3 STAR?) - Rooms priced at 180 baht single, 280 baht for double/twin. It's looks like quite a quiet, small friendly place, although I didn't see the rooms as they were full, so don't necessarily trust my Star rating. I did see photos though, and the rooms looked small, simple, with window (the window the reason I gave it 3 stars). Share bathroom. Email: chaihouse1990@hotmail.com Address: 49/4-8 Trok Rong Mai

28) Bella Bella House (2.5/3 STAR) - Rooms for between 200 baht and 520 baht per night. I just saw the cheaper rooms here as the others were full, so perhaps don't rely totally on my Star rating for this guesthouse. For 200 baht per night, you can get a smallish single, fan room with window and share bathroom. For 250 baht, you can get a single fan room with private, cold water bathroom. The double rooms, which I didn't see, cost 270 baht (share bathroom, fan), 420 baht (private bathroom, fan) and up to 520 bht (air-con, share bathroom. The share bathrooms were clean looking and had cold showers - not that you need hot howers in Bangkok! Tel: +66 (0)2 6293090 / 6293091

29) Banglumpoo Place (2.5 / 3 STAR) - Rooms range in price from about 400 baht to about 800 baht and are OK. They also do their 800 baht rooms monthly for 12,000 baht. Have a look on their website: www.banglumpooplace.net (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 282 9632 / 282 9633 Email: banglumpooplace@hotmail.com

30) K.S House (2.5 / 3 STAR) - Single fan rooms here cost 300 baht, air-con rooms 500 baht per night. Rooms are quite small but include private bathroom. See their website for more details: www.ks-house.net (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 6291763 / 6291764 Email: ks_house@hotmail.com

31) Sawasdee House (2.5 / 3 STAR) - Nicely furnished hotel with a very popular and sociable outdoor restaurant area. Rooms range from 250 baht for a boxlike single fan room up to 1,300 baht for a room that was attractive but small, I thought, for the price. See the rooms on their website: www.sawasdee-house.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 2818138 Email: sawasdeehouse09@hotmail.com

32) New Siam Guest House (2.5 STAR) - Rooms here range in price from 280 baht up to 620 baht per night. I was shown 2 rooms. The 620 baht room had me in two minds. on the one hand, it had a large TV, air-con, window and private hot water bathroom. one part of the room was quite nicely decorated. However another part was unattractively furnished, with an ugly, metal uncomfortable looking seat. The same seat was in the small single room I saw, for 280 baht. This room had no window and has share bathroom. It also came with a mirror and seat. The room was clean. Website: www.newsiam.net (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 281 7461 Address: 21, Soi Chana Songkram. Email them through their website.

33) Four Sons Village (2.5 STAR) - I was shown a double room for 450 baht per night. It was OK, with air-con, TV, table and chairs, window and hot water bathroom. It was quite small though. Rooms vary in price from 300 baht up to 700 baht per night. Website: www.fs-hotel.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 629 5390 on Soi Chana Songkram.

34) Sukpasath Hotel (2.5 STAR) - This seems to be the resident police meeting spot - there were dozens of police around, sitting around relaxing. Security should be good! The hotel perhaps has more Thai guests (just one English channel on the small TV in the rooms - Star Movies). Rooms, costing 400 baht per night, were OK. The room I saw was quite a good size, with private hot water bathroom, but the room had a slightly worn, used smell and feel. Tel: +66 (0)2 281 6862

35) New Merry V Guesthouse (2.5 STAR) - Rooms with TV and air-con were quite small and seemed a bit overpriced at 590 baht. There are also some single fan rooms with share bathroom for just 150 baht which were small but OK. Tel: +66 (0)2 2803315 / 6290462 Email: newmerry@yahoo.com

36) Baan Sabai (2.5 STAR) - Rooms range in price from 170 baht up to 550 baht per night. The 550 baht room comes with air-con, hot water private shower, a nice bed and table and chairs. However I felt the room was dull/boring in it's decoration. The other room I saw, for 170 baht, was a box room, small, single bed with no window and fan and share cold water showers and toilets, which were nice and clean. Tel: +66 (0)2 6291599 email: baansabai@hotmail.com Address: 12, Trok Rong Mai

37) Place Inn (2.5 STAR) - Quite small, simple rooms for 300 baht (one or 2 people) with TV, air-con and a very small balcony overlooking the action along Soi Rambuttri. Showers and toilets are outside the rooms. There are also 400 baht rooms here but I didn't see these. Tel: +66 (0)2 629 3657 Address: 28/10 Soi Rambuttri.

38) Thara House (2.5 STAR) - Rooms range in price from 200 baht (fan, share bathroom) up to 600 baht per night. I saw 2 rooms. A 500 baht, double room was OK. It came with air-con, TV, private hot water bathroom and a window. There was also a small table with seats, and a wardrobe. A 400 baht room I saw was without a window and didn't look very nice. Website (not constructed as of Oct, 2009): www.tharahouse.net (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 280 5910 / 2805911 Email: thara_house@hotmail.com Address: 100 - 100/1 Phra Arthit Road.

39) Erawan House (2 / 2.5 STAR) - This hotel has an attractive lobby area, and is colorfully decorated (in purple). The rooms for 850 baht (1 or 2 people) a night are quite nice, but they're small for the price and there's no view from the window. Rooms come with TV, air-con, private hot water shower. There are also 600 baht rooms which also come with air-con, TV and private hot water bathroom. The view was still non-existent. The room felt boring and again, overpriced. Website: www.erawanhouse.net (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 629 2121 Address: 17/1-2 Soi Chana Songkhram Email: erawanhouse@gmail.com

40) Sawasdee Welcome Inn (2 STAR) - Part of the not-so-good Sawasdee chain and this one lived up to my expectations! Rooms range in price from 250 baht up to 750 baht. The best value room here, I thought, was the cheapest. The 250 baht fan, single-bed room was small, but had a window and small TV. Share hot water bathroom. The air-con single, share bathroom room, with TV and window for 320 baht, looked older and more used and not as inviting. The small, double bed, fan room I saw, for 450 baht a night, came with private bathroom and TV but no window. The double bed, private bathroom 500 baht room I saw, with air-con did have a window which made the room better. There are many rooms here - it's easy to get lost in all the corridors...security may be an issue...I didn't see any security cameras. Website: www.hotelsawasdee.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 6292320 / 6292321

41) Sawasdee Smile Inn (2 STAR) - A rabbit warren of a hotel with very small rooms with TV's. Single fan rooms with share hot water bathroom start at 260 baht per night but have no window so can get hot and stuffy. (an offer on in May, '09 was 'stay 2 nights, 3rd night free' for just the cheaper rooms). Prices go up to 480 and more baht for attached hot water bathroom and air-con but still the rooms are small. Website: www.hotelsawasdee.com (opens in new window).Tel: +66 (0)2 6292340 / 6292341

42) Sitdhi (2 STAR) - Nothing special here except the cheap price - 150 baht per night for single fan rooms with bathroom outside (250 baht for double). Private bathroom costs 300 baht. Website: www.sitdhiguesthouse.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 2823090

43) Sawasdee Krungthep Inn (2 STAR) - The smallish rooms here with window into the corridor come with air-con, TV, hot water and private bathrooms. For 500 or 600 baht per night, you can find a better deal elsewhere. Website: www.hotelsawasdee.com Tel: +66 (0)2 629 0079 Email: rsvnsb@sawasdee-hotels.com Address: 30 Soi Rambuttri.

44) Pra Arthit Mansion (2 STAR) - The room I saw here, for 500 baht was overpriced compared to other guesthouses nearby. It was quite small and felt a bit old. There's a small TV in the room and private hot water bathroom. Wifi costs an extra 200 baht per day (too much I feel). Website: www.phraarthitmansion.com (opens in new window). Tel: +66 (0)2 2800 744 Address: 22 Phra Arthit Road

45) Roof Garden (Sun) Guesthouse - The guesthouse was full so I didn't see the rooms. The tall hotel is quite striking and attractive.
