Cheap Hotel in Bangok - Sam Sen Road area

For a cheap hotel in Bangkok, the Samsen Road area is a good option, just 5 minutes walk from the 'backpacker' street of Khao San Road. This area is much quieter than Khao San and the Soi Rambuttri/Phra Arthit Road area, as long as you get away from busy Samsen Road. There are many small, quiet streets off Samsen road where you can find guesthouses and hotels and also apartment buildings. Accommodation is often better value for money in this area too. Many travelers like it here because it feels more like 'normal' Thailand - children play football and badminton in the afternoon, locals sit around chatting.

Match the numbers on the map with the hotels/guesthouses below.

If you want to see the map below larger and better quality and/or to print the map, click here. (opens in new window).

For the best quality printing, make sure you save it to your computer and print, rather than printing straight from the internet.

I haven't included my Navbar on this page, so that you can see the map larger. Click here to go to my Bangkok page.

To find this area, have a look at the Bangkok map. Look on the left hand side, a little above center. Find the number 14, next to the Chao Phraya river. That's the same 'Pier Number 14' that you can see in the top left corner of the map below.

I've included a STAR RATING for the accommodation, from 1 to 5 STARS.

5 STARS is EXCELLENT

1 STAR is BAD

How did I decide what star rating to give?

  • Value for money. This is relation to other guesthouses and hotels in the area. For instance, I've given some hotels just a 2 star, but that same hotel in a city like Hong Kong or in Chinatown in Bangkok wouldn't be bad! So the actual quality of a 2 STAR hotel room might be higher than 2 STARS gives credit.

  • How the rooms and hotel looks and also the feel of the hotel.

  • A guesthouse might have moved from, for example, a 2.5 Star to 3 Star if there was a sociable feel to the place, perhaps the staff were really friendly.

14) Roof View Place (3/3.5 STAR) - Rooms here in this attractive looking, quite large hotel cost 580 baht (single), 680 baht (2 people) and 980 baht (3 people). I was shown the rom at 680 baht per night. The room wasn't very big but it was painted nicely in white which gives the room a fresh feel (also helped by the 'No Smoking in Room' sign). There's a small balcony, but no seats on it. There's also a small TV and fridge and private hot water bathroom. There's free wifi in the rooms and free breakfast in the morning. The cheapest room, priced at just 170 baht, was small and simple. I also saw a 350 baht room that was a good size. Prices go up to about 460 baht per night. For 220 baht you can get a small room with your own toilet. Tel: +66 (0)2 2827464

16) Hotel De' Moc (3/3.5 STAR) - A large hotel, the rooms here are quite stylish but perhaps a bit overpriced. The cheaper rooms, at 2,100 baht per night (discounted from 3,000 baht) were a bit smaller but still had a balcony, yet didn't feel as nice somehow - I'd pay the extra 350 baht if you're willing to spend this amount of money. Both rooms come with air-con, TV, hot water private bathroom. A nice touch is the towels on the bed, made up in the shape of an elephant. There's a good size pool here (although it's right next to the main road). There's free wifi and a half hour thai massage free too. Check the latest price on the website (walk-ins may be cheaper): www.hoteldemoc.com (opens in new window) Email: booking@hoteldemoc.com Tel: +66 (0)2 629 2100 (can replace the last digit with 1 to 5 to get through).Address: 78 Prajatipatai Road.

17) Banglumpphu Guest House (3.5 STAR) I liked the fan room I saw here, for 300 baht for 2 people (possibly 200 baht for 1 person if you ask nicely!). It was a good size and had a balcony. The attractive wooden house has just a handful of rooms. It's run by an elderly lady called Saiyoot. There's a friendly cute dog here! Tel: +66 (0)2 281 2008 Address: 149 Sam Sen Soi 1 (Soi Lamphu).

18) Villa Guest House (3.5 STAR) - If you like antique furniture, wooden rooms and a real traditional feel, certainly think about staying here - down a discreet lane off Sam Sen Soi 1, the small sign saying 'Villa' can easily be overlooked. The place has an attractive garden. Single fan rooms cost 250 baht, rooms with a double bed cost 350 baht and 550 baht a night. The 550 baht room is particularly nice. The only thing was the sheets seemed a bit worn but I wonder whether this is part of the artistic owner's plan! There's also free coffee and tea anytime and a fridge you can use in the kitchen. Tel: +66 (0)2 281 7009

19) Pailin Guest House (3/3.5 STAR) - Down a small Soi, this guesthouse is tucked away far enough for the traffic from busy Sam Sen road to not be an issue. 25) Baan Chantra (3 STAR) - This boutique guest house has a nice cozy feel with just 6 rooms and has friendly staff. The building itself is an old-style attractive house, on busy Sam Sen Road, so noise may be an issue. The rooms are priced between 2,700 and 4,000 baht nightly (cheaper if you stay longer - eg: a week stay and they'll cost between 1,900 and 2,900 baht). The room I saw, at 3,100 baht, was very nice but I thought it was a bit small for the price. In a quiet area near to the river, rooms are OK and priced between 220 and 500 baht per night. For 250 baht, you can get a single with fan and private bathroom, for 300 baht, a double fan room with private bathroom. Tel: +66 (0)2 6288077 / 6288078 Email: bella_bella_riverview@hotmail.com

The large double, at 700 baht is a good size and comes with satellite TV and air-con, as do the smaller double room and single room, both priced at 600 baht. The price is liable to change! 31) Mit (or Mitr) Paisarn (2.5 STAR) - Rooms for 600 baht (1 or 2 people) come with fridge, air-con, TV and hot water private bathroom with bathtub. The room I saw had a slightly worn feel. 32) Nakorn Ping Hotel (2.5 STAR) - Rooms here were OK but, I thought, a little overpriced compared with hotels nearby. Rooms for 1 or 2 people cost with fan (490 baht, with hot water: 590 baht) or air-con (590 baht, with hot water 690 baht) come with TV, fridge and private bathroom. The hotel isn't particularly attractive to look at from the outside - the room I saw felt a little old. Prices go up to 1050 baht per night with 2 double beds in the room. Website: www.nakornpinghotel.com (opens in new window) Email: info@nakornpinghotel.com Tel: +66 (0)2 281 6574 / (0)2 282 7237

33) Vadee Hotel (or Sukavadee Hotel) (2.5 STAR) - For 380 baht (1 or 2 people), you can get just an OK room with TV, air-con and hot water private bathroom. Rooms feel a little old. 34) Vorapong Guest House - (2/2.5 STAR) - Rooms for 500 baht a night feel a bit old and used, but come with TV, air-con, private hot water bathroom. The room I was shown downstairs came without a window and didn't make me want to stay there. The upstairs room with window (same price) as a slightly fresher feel. Tel: +66 (0)2 281 1992 / (0)2 281 1993 Address: 39, Sam Sen Soi 6.

35) Suksawad Hotel (2 STAR) - The rooms here feel a bit old and...'used'. They're not small and do have toilet inside. Price is 320 baht a night for the fan rooms, 430 baht a night for the air-con rooms. The entrance is on Sam Sen Road between Sam Sen Soi 4 and Sam Sen Soi 6. Tel: +66 (0)2 281 7622 / 281 7837 Email: suksawad_hotel@hotmail.com

36) Vimol Guest House (2 STAR) - on a quiet street in a quiet area, rooms here cost just 80 or 100 baht for a single room, 140 baht for a double and 210/280 baht for 3/4 people. However, the room I saw was small and looked like it could do with a scrub. Tel: +66 (0)2 2814615

37) Clean and Calm Guesthouse (2 STAR) - Peaceful place on a quiet street with singe rooms for 120 baht, double at 140 baht per night. The mattress I saw didn't look nice. Tel: +66 (0)2 282 2093

38) Paul G. House - Popular with Koreans this place was a bit different to other guesthouses I've seen - Koreans happily using their laptops downstairs while making use of the free toast and coffee facilities with no manager in sight! I didn't see the rooms. Single rooms cost 150 baht, doubles between 250 and 300 baht and triples at 350 baht. There's also a dormitory here for 120 baht nightly. Tel: Mobile - 084 7145596

39) Cafe Lampu - I didn't see the rooms here, for 200 baht per night, as they were full. There's a small, popular bar downstairs, with pool table. Website: www.cafelampu.com (opens in new window) Address: 18/1 Sam Sen Soi 1. Tel: +66 (0)2 629 0396

41) Swana Bangkok Hotel (3/3.5 STAR) - Attractive, modern style hotel with rooms from 1,400 baht to 1,800 baht per night. The rooms are smartly decorated with modern furniture. Rooms come with small fridge, TV, secure-looking safe, air-con and hot water bathrooms. The hotel is next to a busy road. See the website for the latest prices and pictures of the rooms: www.swanabangkok.com (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)2 282 8899 Address: 332 Visuttikasat Road. Email: info@swanabangkok.com

Old Bangkok Inn (3 STAR) - This place is located off the map. Look at the bottom right hand corner of the map. The guesthouse is located further along Phra Sumen Road, to the right. Keep going along Phra Sumen Road for about 400 meters. Old Bangkok Inn is on the left side of the road. I would have given this place a higher star rating as it has great, uniquely decorated rooms. However, I feel they're overpriced. Rooms start at 3,190 baht. I saw 2 rooms. The 5,500 baht nightly room was really lovely, with sofa, comfy, romantic bed! and plasma TV. The 3,900 baht room was lovely too, with an upstairs area of the room that you get to climbing ladder like steps (not vertical though!) There's a wooden, homely style to the communal areas and the rooms. All rooms come with private hot water bathrooms, computers with free internet connection and breakfast is included in the price. It's on busy Phra Sumen Road, so possibly noise may be an issue. Website: www.oldbangkokinn.com (opens in new window). Apartments / Long Term Stay.

23) Baanpantom Apartment (3 STAR) - This place just offers monthly stays or longer. For 6,500 baht per month (13,000 baht deposit), for a one month stay (3 to 4 months, 6,000 baht a month, 6 month stay, 5,000 baht per month), the room is an OK size. The glass door in the room I saw just opened out onto a wall. The hot water private was new, modern and clean. You'll have to buy your own sheets and pillow if you want to stay. A larger room costs 6,500 baht a month (minimum stay, 6 months) but again, the glass door opened to not much more than a wall. The rooms felt boring somehow - perhaps once you've got some things in there, it wouldn't be like that. You can use wifi here but you'll have to buy cards (think they're about 500 baht for 24 hours use). You have to pay extra for water and electricity. Tel: +66 (0)2 629 4912 (can replace the last two digits with 13 or 14 to get through). Mobile (Angie): 081 845 0302 Email: rungtip@yhm-group.co.th

40) M.N Residence - A large apartment building with rooms available on a monthly basis (you can stay just one month if you like). I didn't see the rooms here as they were full. Rooms cost 6,000 baht per month. Larger rooms with living room area cost 12,000 baht. They're air-con and are fully-furnished. You have to pay for electricity and water yourself. Extras include fridge (500 baht/month), TV (500 baht/month) and wifi (500 baht/month). There's a swimming pool here. Tel: +66 (0)2 628 7800 / (0)2 281 4581 / (0)2 280 0893 Address: 80, Sam Sen Soi 5 (it's close to busy Sam Sen Road).

42) Juldis River Mansion (3/3.5 STAR) - This apartment building has great views of either Chao Phrays river or across Bangkok. It's large, with about 17 floors. You have to stay here a minimum of 3 months. Apartments vary in price from 15,000 baht monthly (37 square meters) up to 28,000 baht (80 square meters). I saw an apartment for 25,000 baht monthly, up on the 14th floor with an amazing view of the city The apartment was a really good size, with a separate kitchen, living and bedroom area. What I liked especially was that it had a homely feel. It's fully furnished, with a fully equipped kitchen, so you could just move in and not have to change anything. The sun rises in the morning on this side of the building and, being high up, the apartment was warm. Of course, you have air-con, but it is something to consider. Lower down (and cooler) was a single room (with private hot water bathroom with bathtub) for 15,000 baht per month. The room was a good size and come with TV, microwave, fridge and a very large window with superb views over the river, which is just a few meters away. Wifi is an extra 500 baht per month.Tel: +66 (0)2 281 0776

43) Baan Permsuk (2.5/3 Star) - You have to stay here a minimum of 4 months (giving 2 months deposit). The rooms were just OK, i thought, but they are quite cheap for the month. 4,000 baht, up to 4,800 baht and 5,000 baht per month (not including water or electric, TV and fridge: extra 500 baht per month each). All the rooms were an OK size but seemed boring to me somehow. The bed didn't look too comfy. You have to buy your own bedsheets. What was nice were the bathrooms, colorfully, nicely decorated. Rooms are air-con. The 4,800 baht room I saw came with an outside area. Tel: +66 (0)2 628 7101 (can replace the last digit with 2,3,4 or 5 to get through). Address: 172 Soi Watmaiammatarot Visutkasat Rd.

44) Sri Prasoapphol Apartment (2.5 STAR) - Not exactly an apartment! OK sized, simple rooms with cold water private bathroom and fan cost 3,000 baht per month. Mobile Tel (will definitely need to speak Thai: 08 98944174

45) June Apartment I didn't see the rooms here as they were full. Rooms cost 2,700 baht per month. The building didn't look particularly nice. There are security cameras here.

46) - Large new hotel or apartment building that will be finished in the year 2010.

47) - Looks like a place that rents monthly. It could be just for women. A large building, on the gate is written some Thai (which I didn't understand), and a mobile telephone number: 08 5550 2255.

Praveen House (number 8 above) and Prasuri Guest House (number 9 above) have good monthly rates. Pranakorn Inn (number 2 above) might reduce 1 or 2 thousand per month if you stay 3 months. Most other places might reduce the price if you stay for 2 weeks or a month or more.

Thewet Guesthouses (map coming very shortly!)

(In case you read this before I make the map, to get to this quieter, less touristy area that has a lively day market nearby, keep going north along Samsen Road (see map above). After about 500 meters, you'll go over a small bridge that crosses a canal. Take the next left after the bridge (about 100 meters) (there's a large CIMB Thai Bank on the corner of the turn you need to make). Continue down this quiet, (unsignposted) road for about 100 meters and you'll see the first guesthouse, Tavee, on your right. All the other guesthouses are nearby on the same side of the road).

Tavee Guest House (3.5 STAR) - Quiet guesthouse down a small lane from its sister guesthouse, Sri-Ayuttaya Guest House (see below) the place has small rooms with comfortable looking double beds and very clean for 300 baht (1 or 2 people). Taewez Guesthouse (3/3.5 STAR) - I liked the quite small, simple, but nicely decorated fan rooms with share toilet here for 250 baht nightly. The air-con room for 1 person, priced at 400 baht, I didn't like so much. I didn't see the 480 baht air-con rooms for 2 people. Tel: +66 (0)2 280 8856 / 280 8857 Website: www.taewez.com Email: info@taewez.com Address: 23/12 Sri Ayuttaya Rd.
