Sun, Sand, Sea & Surgery

Many tourists are choosing to come to Phuket's better establishments for elective surgery and other treatments to avoid long waiting lists in their home countries.

The range and quality of treatments available on the island continue to rise, particularly in areas such as dental and eye care, cosmetic and sex reassignment surgery, and kidney dialysis treatments.

While nobody wishes to get sick, particularly when on holiday or away from home, those who do use the healthcare services in Phuket report pleasing and satisfactory results, sometimes even better than what they receive at home. Minimal waiting times and low costs top the list of advantages Phuket hospitals have over western countries.

Hospitalization

Hospitalization in Phuket, for the tourist, will usually be arranged by the first doctor who has treated you or through the emergency or outpatient department of the hospital you have visited. Admission procedures will be similar to those at home, and you will need to fill in consent and admission forms. If you're being admitted to a private hospital, payment details will also need to be finalized and this can be as easy as showing your insurance details.

Private hospital rooms in Phuket are similar to 3-4 star hotel rooms, each with a TV and satellite channels, fridge, telephone and other amenities. Your family will be able to freely visit you, and if required, are welcome to stay with you as extra beds can be arranged.

Ambulances

Phuket does not have central, professionally run ambulance services and most transports are completed by the private and public hospitals. Visitors who need to be transported to hospital will usually make their own arrangements, either using the public taxi services or through arrangements with their hotel. If you are away from the main hospitals in Phuket, speedboats and helicopters are available, and you are advised to call the hospital directly or seek assistance from your hotel.
